Shawna Alston (they/she) is an undergraduate student at William & Mary studying both English & Africana Studies. Many of Shawna’s interests lie at the intersection of language, race, and storytelling, and more specifically, the expressiveness, drama, and communality of Black language. She has worked with The Lemon Project on projects attempting to deconstruct her campus’s white supremacist history by engaging critically with oral histories and other primary sources. She is working again with the Lemon Project this summer alongside the BAD Lab to further engage and connect these interests with the hope of developing a thesis topic. Shawna plans to pursue a JD after her undergraduate studies conclude in 2025.
