Mia Harris (she/her/hers) is a Social Science Research Professional in the GSE Faculty Labs & Research department. She also serves as the Education Research Coordinator for the Stanford Black Academic Development Lab and as the Managing Editor for the forthcoming Journal of Black Language and Culture.

Her research interests span literature, literacy, education, history, and the theoretical phenomenologies of Black language, particularly as they relate to feminism, gender, love, joy, pleasure, resistance, and sexual/gender-based violence. Her previous work—including her master’s thesis at the University of Oxford—focused on Black women’s writing and language, exploring how novels, online communities, and rap music contribute to cultures of resilience.

As a researcher, Mia investigates how both language, literacy, and the creative arts are remediated as acts of resistance by Black women and girls against the imperializing forces of misogynoir, capitalism, and racism. At the BAD Lab, she supports various editorial and research efforts tied to the lab’s initiatives and publication projects, all while preparing for advanced graduate study. Mia plans to pursue doctoral candidacy in Higher Education with a focus on curriculum and policy, alongside a terminal master’s degree in English or African American Studies. Her goal is to explore how to create culturally responsive writing, literacy, and literature programs in higher education . She is excited to contribute to the lab’s cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research on Black language and culture and to help advance the educational experiences of today’s Black students.
