Jamaal Muwwakkil, M.A. (he/him) is a Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Muwwakkil holds linguistics PhD candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was also the 2019-20 University of California (UC) Student Regent-designate and the 2020-21 UC Student Regent. Jamaal’s research specializations include African American language and culture, sociocultural linguistics, and political discourse.

As a first-generation college student, Jamaal transferred from Los Angeles City College to UCLA, where he earned his bachelor's degree in applied linguistics with honors. While at UCLA, he completed an undergraduate thesis focused on the institutional discourse surrounding peer-to-peer file sharing. Upon matriculating to UC Santa Barbara, he developed an M.A. thesis addressing the discourse of politically conservative student groups on a UC campus. Building on these themes, his dissertation research focuses on institutional discourses concerning diversity and inclusion at minority-serving institutions, and Black student socialization.
